Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

Los Angeles, California

A transparent, half globe is surrounded by palm trees. A simple, rectangular multi-story white building is connected to the globe.

Guy Hermann led the development of a Strategic Master Plan and Detailed Architectural Program for the new 250,000 square foot Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. The Museum will be an international destination for tourists, film professionals, and Academy members. It will include comprehensive movie history, filmmaking, and Academy Award exhibits and a 1,000 seat theater and associated rooftop event space that will be Hollywood’s most sought after venue for movie premieres.

The planning process began with workshop interviews with a wide variety of Academy members and other members of the film community. Then, the comprehensive Strategic Master Plan process developed multiple programmatic and operating scenarios designed to help Academy members make decisions about space allocations and project budgets. Following selection of an operating and space use scenario, Guy participated in the architectural selection team and worked with the selected team to ensure conformity with the intent and details of the architectural program. The new museum, designed by Renzo Piano, is located adjacent to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art campus in the former May Company building, at the start of Los Angeles' Miracle Mile.
