Museum L/A (now Maine MILL)

Lewiston, Maine

A warehouse room shows bins of shoe making forms. One is overturned and the shoe forms spill on to the floor.

A relatively new museum, Museum L/A sought to use the region's now silent textile mills to tell the story of Maine industry and act as a tourist destination for visitors to nearby Portland. The master planning work focused on helping the museum’s stakeholders define the museum’s focus. Through a series of workshop interviews with a wide variety of community members (from former mill workers to the mayor), it became clear that the museum was a key to establishing and reinforcing the community’s identity and its values. The resulting master plan focused on centering the values of work and community within the museum's programs and business model. Space planning and site analysis and selection work were also undertaken as part of the master plan process.

In addition to Master Planning, Museum Insights partnered with Roberts Consulting to provide strategic planning, and objectIDEA for interpretive planning and exhibit concepts.
